E-Z Power Duster

The Firman Pollen Company "E-Z Power Duster" is a general broadcast applicator that allows rapid application of pollen in all pollinating conditions. The simplicity of its design and the ease of its use makes precision dusting applications possible, affordable, and practical.

The Firman Pollen Company's "E-Z Power Duster" is designed to be used with gas powered leaf blowers or backpack power-blowers. Simply attach the flexible tubing to the air source, the clamps are provided, and the "E-Z Power Duster" is ready for application.

Planning Your Application:

The "E-Z Power Duster" can be used on small or large acreage. However, the size of the field to be covered will influence your method of application. Acreages of one to five acres are easily covered by walking the field, using a shoulder strap with the leaf blower or carrying a backpack power blower on your back. With larger acreages we recommend transportation within the field. Two successful methods have been used, driving the orchard on a tractor with a bin-lift attachment and a bin, or using a pick-up. Both methods require two operators, one driving and one operating the duster.

Spreading the Pollen Evenly:
Eight rocks of the trigger will dispense approximately one gram of the pollen-carrier mix. In order to spread the recommended amount of pollen-carrier mix evenly over the desired acreage you will need to know the number of trees planted on each acre, then a simple formula can be used:

1. Multiply the recommended grams per acre by eight. This will give you the total strokes that will be used on one acre.

2. Divide the number that you got in part one above by the number of trees planted per acre. This number will be the number of strokes that will be used on each tree.

Example: I have 106 trees per acre. 120 grams of one half strength pollen have been recommended per acre.

1. 120 grams per acre x 8 strokes per gram = 960 strokes per acre

2. 960 strokes divided by 106 trees = 9 and 1/2 strokes per tree.

Preparing For Application:

Open the hopper and fill it approximately half full. A lesser amount can, of course, be used; but do not over fill the hopper. A large spoon or a small scoop is recommended for making the transfer. The "E-Z Power Duster" is now ready for application.

Technique:

1. Work only one side of the tree, allowing the drift to cover the backside. Work with any wind at your back.

2. Move the duster up or down while rocking the trigger. This delivers the pollen in an arc instead of a puff.

3. Apply the pollen to areas of the tree, not individual flowers or leaders. For example, if the calculations above showed that you could use 9 strokes per tree then visually divide the tree into nine areas and use one stroke in each area.

General Advice:

Pollen application is like pruning in that everyone does it a little differently. However, if instructing someone in using the "E-Z Power Duster" we recommend that you stick to the technique mentioned above.
