The Firman Pollen Company's Air Blast Sprayer application device is a system
that has been used by professional pollen applicators for decades. It is
now available for individual customers. This devise is designed to be used
universally with all air blast sprayer types. Unfortunately that means that
you the user will have to figure out the best system for attaching the applicator
to your particular sprayer. The applicator is designed to feed the pollen/carrier mix into the air intake of the sprayer and be dispersed where ever that air is flowing to. The pollen does not come out of the nozzles! Because only the air is important the air flow must be managed. Your sprayer may require some modifications: The restrictors maybe as simple as cardboard and duct tape or as complex as you wish to make them. Calibration: General application: The applicator is supplied with 240 grams of calibration pollen. General recommended application rates for many pollens are 120 grams per acre split into two applications of 60 grams each. When figuring calibration rates remember the 120 grams would be first application on two acres. Also it is only necessary to apply pollen to one side of the tree. The pollen will be disbursed on both sides of the spray rig. This allows you to drive every other row. Before mounting the applicator record the amount of time that it takes for the unit to dispense 120 grams at various rheostat settings. Collect the pollen as it is dispensed so that you can reuse it for various rheostat settings. The amount of time needed to dispense the pollen at various settings will determine your speed of travel through the orchard for various application rates. Once the stationary calibration is complete mount the unit on the spray rig to recheck the calibration settings with the air turned on. The air flow may well double or even triple the rate at which the pollen is dispensed. We recommend "Low, Low" for your first airflow calibration check. Mounting the Applicator: All Air blast spray rigs are slightly different. Because of this the mounting of the applicator will require engineering on your own sprayer. Remember to mount the applicator so that the pollen is dispensed into the air intake. This may be as simple as wiring it to the protective screen or as complicated as building a mounting unit, as shown in the accompanying picture. |
